Scale
Sandwich Ingredients
- 4 slices sourdough bread
- 1 cup fresh mushrooms (button or cremini), chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon unsalted butter (plus extra for grilling)
- 4 ounces sharp cheddar cheese, sliced or grated
- 1 teaspoon fresh thyme (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare the Ingredients: Chop the mushrooms into small pieces and mince the garlic cloves finely to prepare for sautéing.
- Cook the Mushrooms: Heat a skillet over medium heat and melt 1 tablespoon of unsalted butter. Add the chopped mushrooms and sauté for 5 to 7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the mushrooms are soft and golden brown.
- Add Garlic and Thyme: Stir in the minced garlic and fresh thyme (if using) and cook for about 1 minute more until fragrant. Remove the skillet from the heat to prevent burning the garlic.
- Assemble the Sandwich: Place a slice of sourdough bread on a clean surface, layer with a generous amount of sautéed mushrooms, then cover with sharp cheddar cheese. Top with a second slice of bread to form the sandwich.
- Grill the Sandwich: Wipe the skillet clean and heat it over medium-low heat. Add a small amount of butter to the pan. Place the assembled sandwich in the skillet and grill for about 3 to 4 minutes on each side, pressing gently, until both sides are golden brown and the cheese has melted.
- Serve: Remove the sandwich from the skillet and let it cool slightly for a couple of minutes. Slice in half and serve warm for the best flavor experience.
Notes
- Use fresh mushrooms like button or cremini for the best texture and flavor.
- The addition of fresh thyme is optional but adds a nice herbal aroma.
- Butter the outside of the bread slices lightly before grilling to achieve a crispy, golden crust.
- If you prefer, substitute cheddar with other melty cheeses like Gruyère or mozzarella.
- Cook on medium-low heat to ensure the cheese melts without burning the bread.
