Description

Classic Scalloped Potatoes baked to creamy perfection with tender, thinly sliced white potatoes layered in a savory homemade onion and garlic sauce. This comforting side dish is creamy, flavorful, and baked until golden and bubbly, ideal for family dinners or holiday meals.

Ingredients

Scale

Sauce Ingredients

  • ¼ cup butter
  • 1 large onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • ¼ cup flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 cup chicken broth
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon pepper

Potatoes

  • 3 pounds white potatoes, sliced about ” thick
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Set your oven to 350°F (175°C) to preheat while preparing the ingredients.
  2. Prepare Sauce: In a medium saucepan over medium-low heat, melt ¼ cup of butter. Sauté the diced onion and minced garlic until they are soft and fragrant, about 3 minutes. Stir in ¼ cup flour and cook for 1-2 minutes to form a roux that will thicken the sauce.
  3. Thicken Sauce: Gradually whisk in 2 cups of milk and 1 cup chicken broth over low heat, continuing to whisk until the mixture is smooth. Bring the sauce to a boil, then continue cooking for 1 minute to thicken. Season with ½ teaspoon salt and ¼ teaspoon pepper to taste.
  4. Assemble Layers: Grease a 9″x13″ baking dish. Arrange one-third of the sliced potatoes in the dish in an even layer. Season lightly with salt and pepper. Pour one-third of the prepared sauce evenly over the potatoes. Repeat this layering two more times, ending with the sauce on top.
  5. Bake: Cover the dish with foil and bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes. Remove the foil carefully, then bake for an additional 35-45 minutes until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden brown. For a crispier top, optionally broil for 3-4 minutes but watch carefully to prevent burning.
  6. Rest: Remove the scalloped potatoes from the oven and let them rest for 15 minutes before serving. This helps the dish set and makes serving easier.

Notes

  • Slice potatoes uniformly about ⅛ inch thick for even cooking.
  • Use a mandoline slicer if available to get consistent potato thickness.
  • Adjust seasoning to taste; add more salt or pepper if desired.
  • The optional broil step adds a crispy golden top but should be monitored carefully.
  • Letting the dish rest before serving helps the sauce thicken slightly.
  • For a vegetarian version, substitute chicken broth with vegetable broth.
