Ingredients
Scale
Crust
- 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup brown sugar
- ½ cup butter, softened
Turtle Layer
- â…” cup butter
- ½ cup brown sugar
- 1 cup pecan halves
Chocolate Topping
- 1 cup milk chocolate chips
Instructions
- Preheat the Oven: Set your oven to 350°F (175°C) to prepare it for baking the bars.
- Make the Crust: In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, brown sugar, and softened butter. Beat at medium speed for 2 to 3 minutes until the mixture forms fine crumbs. Press this mixture evenly into the bottom of an ungreased 13×9-inch baking pan to form the crust layer.
- Prepare the Turtle Layer: Place ⅔ cup butter and ½ cup brown sugar in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir constantly until the mixture bubbles, then continue cooking for 30 to 60 seconds. Remove the pan from heat immediately to prevent burning.
- Assemble the Layers: Evenly spread 1 cup of pecan halves over the crust in the baking pan. Carefully pour the hot butter and brown sugar mixture over the pecans, coating them well.
- Bake: Place the pan in the preheated oven and bake for 18 to 20 minutes or until the surface is bubbly and the sugar mixture has slightly caramelized.
- Add the Chocolate Topping: Once baked, remove the pan from the oven and immediately sprinkle 1 cup of milk chocolate chips evenly over the hot turtle layer. Allow the chocolate chips to melt for 2 to 3 minutes, then gently swirl the melted chocolate with a knife to create a marbled effect.
- Cool: Let the bars cool completely in the pan for about 30 minutes to set properly. After cooling, slice the bars into 48 pieces and serve.
Notes
- Press the crust mixture firmly and evenly to create a sturdy base for the turtle layer.
- Stir the butter and brown sugar mixture constantly to avoid burning during caramelization.
- Use quality pecans for the best flavor and crunch.
- Swirling the chocolate topping while still warm creates beautiful marbled visuals.
- Allowing the bars to cool completely before cutting ensures clean slices and prevents crumbling.
