Description

These delightful Turtle Bars combine a buttery, crumbly crust with a rich, gooey turtle layer made of caramelized butter and brown sugar topped with crunchy pecans and melted milk chocolate. Perfectly baked until bubbly and then finished with a silky chocolate topping, these bars offer a perfect balance of sweet, nutty, and chocolate flavors in every bite.

Ingredients

Scale

Crust

  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • ½ cup butter, softened

Turtle Layer

  • â…” cup butter
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup pecan halves

Chocolate Topping

  • 1 cup milk chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Set your oven to 350°F (175°C) to prepare it for baking the bars.
  2. Make the Crust: In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, brown sugar, and softened butter. Beat at medium speed for 2 to 3 minutes until the mixture forms fine crumbs. Press this mixture evenly into the bottom of an ungreased 13×9-inch baking pan to form the crust layer.
  3. Prepare the Turtle Layer: Place ⅔ cup butter and ½ cup brown sugar in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir constantly until the mixture bubbles, then continue cooking for 30 to 60 seconds. Remove the pan from heat immediately to prevent burning.
  4. Assemble the Layers: Evenly spread 1 cup of pecan halves over the crust in the baking pan. Carefully pour the hot butter and brown sugar mixture over the pecans, coating them well.
  5. Bake: Place the pan in the preheated oven and bake for 18 to 20 minutes or until the surface is bubbly and the sugar mixture has slightly caramelized.
  6. Add the Chocolate Topping: Once baked, remove the pan from the oven and immediately sprinkle 1 cup of milk chocolate chips evenly over the hot turtle layer. Allow the chocolate chips to melt for 2 to 3 minutes, then gently swirl the melted chocolate with a knife to create a marbled effect.
  7. Cool: Let the bars cool completely in the pan for about 30 minutes to set properly. After cooling, slice the bars into 48 pieces and serve.

Notes

  • Press the crust mixture firmly and evenly to create a sturdy base for the turtle layer.
  • Stir the butter and brown sugar mixture constantly to avoid burning during caramelization.
  • Use quality pecans for the best flavor and crunch.
  • Swirling the chocolate topping while still warm creates beautiful marbled visuals.
  • Allowing the bars to cool completely before cutting ensures clean slices and prevents crumbling.
