Description

This Syrian Chickpea and Yogurt Casserole is a flavorful and comforting dish featuring tender cooked chickpeas simmered with aromatic spices and sautéed onions, layered with creamy plain yogurt, and baked to a perfect golden finish. Rich in Middle Eastern flavors, it makes a delicious and nutritious meal for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale

Chickpea Mixture

  • 2 cups cooked chickpeas
  • 1 cup onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon ground coriander
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • Salt to taste

Other Ingredients

  • 2 cups plain yogurt
  • 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) to prepare for baking the casserole evenly.
  2. Sauté Aromatics: In a skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat and sauté the finely chopped onions and minced garlic until they become soft and translucent, enhancing their flavors.
  3. Add Chickpeas and Spices: Stir in the cooked chickpeas along with ground cumin, ground coriander, paprika, black pepper, cayenne pepper, and salt to taste. Mix well to combine and allow the spices to coat the chickpeas thoroughly.
  4. Layer Mixture and Yogurt: Transfer the chickpea and spice mixture into a baking dish. Pour the plain yogurt over the chickpeas, spreading it evenly to create distinct layers.
  5. Add Parsley and Bake: Sprinkle the chopped fresh parsley on top of the yogurt layer. Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 30 minutes until the casserole is heated through and lightly golden on top.
  6. Serve: Remove from oven and serve the casserole warm, allowing the flavors to meld beautifully.
