Ingredients
Scale
Strawberry Mixture
- 1 pound fresh strawberries, hulled
- 1 cup granulated sugar, plus more to taste
Liquid Base
- 8 cups water, divided
- 1 ½ cups freshly squeezed lemon juice (from about 8-10 lemons)
For Serving
- Ice cubes
- Lemon slices and whole strawberries, for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Hull the Strawberries: Remove the green leafy parts (hulls) from the strawberries to prepare them for maceration.
- Combine Strawberries and Sugar: In a medium bowl, mix the hulled strawberries with 1 cup of granulated sugar to start releasing their natural juices.
- Macerate the Strawberries: Gently stir the mixture and let it sit at room temperature for at least 30 minutes, up to an hour, stirring occasionally until the strawberries soften and release their juices.
- Puree the Strawberry Mixture: Transfer the strawberry and sugar mixture to a blender or food processor and blend until completely smooth for a luscious puree.
- Strain the Puree (Optional): For a smoother lemonade, pour the puree through a fine-mesh sieve to remove seeds and solids, discarding any residue left behind.
- Squeeze the Lemons: Extract 1 ½ cups of fresh lemon juice from about 8-10 lemons, removing any seeds to avoid bitterness.
- Combine Water and Lemon Juice: In a large pitcher, mix 6 cups of water with the freshly squeezed lemon juice until well blended.
- Add the Strawberry Puree: Pour the smooth strawberry puree into the pitcher containing the lemonade base and stir thoroughly to combine flavors.
- Taste and Adjust Sweetness: Sample the lemonade and add more sugar, one or two tablespoons at a time, until the desired sweetness level is achieved.
- Add Remaining Water: Pour in the remaining 2 cups of water to complete the lemonade and stir well to incorporate all ingredients evenly.
- Chill the Lemonade: Cover the pitcher and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, though an hour or two is preferred, to allow flavors to meld and the drink to become refreshingly cold.
- Serve and Garnish: Fill glasses with ice cubes, pour the chilled strawberry lemonade over the ice, and garnish with lemon slices and whole strawberries if desired for an attractive presentation.
Notes
- You can adjust the sugar amount based on the sweetness of the strawberries and personal preference.
- Straining the strawberry puree is optional but recommended for a seed-free, smoother texture.
- Use fresh lemons for the best flavor; bottled lemon juice will alter the freshness and taste.
- This lemonade can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 2 days but is best enjoyed fresh.
- For a fizzy version, replace some or all the water with sparkling water just before serving.
