Ingredients
Scale
Filling
- 0.5 pound Fresh Mushrooms, chopped (Use cremini or shiitake)
- 1 small Onion, finely chopped (Shallots can be used for milder taste)
- 1 Garlic Clove, minced (Garlic powder is a substitute)
- 0.25 teaspoon Pepper (Adjust to taste)
- 8 ounces Cream Cheese, softened (Can lighten with ricotta or dairy-free cream cheese)
- 1 tablespoon Butter (Substitute with olive oil for dairy-free)
Puff Pastry
- 1 package Frozen Puff Pastry, thawed (Ensure it’s properly thawed)
Instructions
- Preparation: Gather all ingredients and ensure the puff pastry is fully thawed according to package instructions for best handling and baking results.
- Preheat Oven: Set your oven to 400°F (200°C) and allow it to reach the temperature before baking to ensure even cooking and golden pastry.
- Sauté Mushrooms and Onions: In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the chopped mushrooms and onions, cooking for about 3-5 minutes until they are tender and the moisture has mostly evaporated.
- Add Garlic and Seasoning: Stir in the minced garlic and pepper, cooking for an additional minute until fragrant. Remove from heat and mix in the softened cream cheese thoroughly to create a creamy filling.
- Cut Puff Pastry: Unfold the thawed puff pastry sheet on a lightly floured surface. Cut it into 9 equal squares, then slice each square diagonally to form triangles.
- Fill and Seal Pastries: Place about a teaspoon of the mushroom filling on one side of each triangle. Brush the edges lightly with water to help seal them. Fold over each triangle and crimp edges securely with a fork to prevent filling leakage during baking.
- Arrange for Baking: Line baking sheets with parchment paper. Lay the prepared pastry bites on the sheets, leaving some space between each to allow for puffing and crisping.
- Bake: Place the baking sheets in the preheated oven and bake for 12-15 minutes, or until the pastry is puffed, golden brown, and fragrant. Remove from oven and allow to cool slightly before serving.
Notes
- Use cremini or shiitake mushrooms for best flavor and texture.
- Ensure puff pastry is properly thawed for easy handling and optimal puffing during baking.
- For a dairy-free version, substitute cream cheese with a plant-based alternative and butter with olive oil.
- These pastry bites can be served warm or at room temperature.
- Leftovers can be refrigerated in an airtight container and reheated in an oven to maintain crispiness.
