Description

These Pistachio Orange Puff Pastries are a delightful Mediterranean-inspired dessert featuring flaky puff pastry filled with a sweet and fragrant pistachio and orange mixture. Easy to prepare and perfect for any occasion, these pastries combine the crunch of nuts with bright citrus flavors for a delicious treat.

Ingredients

Scale

Pastry

  • 1 sheet frozen puff pastry, thawed

Filling

  • 1/2 cup shelled pistachios, finely chopped
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 tablespoon orange zest
  • 1 tablespoon fresh orange juice
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Egg Wash

  • 1 egg, beaten

For Serving (Optional)

  • 2 tablespoons powdered sugar for dusting
  • Optional orange glaze made from powdered sugar and orange juice

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven and Prepare Baking Sheet: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and ensure easy cleanup.
  2. Prepare the Puff Pastry: On a lightly floured surface, roll out the thawed puff pastry sheet to smooth it out, then cut it into 6 equal rectangles to form individual pastries.
  3. Make the Filling: In a small bowl, combine the finely chopped pistachios, granulated sugar, melted butter, orange zest, fresh orange juice, vanilla extract, and salt. Mix well until all ingredients are thoroughly incorporated.
  4. Assemble the Pastries: Place a spoonful of the pistachio filling in the center of each pastry rectangle. You can fold the pastry over the filling or leave it open; press the edges lightly to seal and hold the filling in place.
  5. Apply Egg Wash: Brush the tops of the pastries with the beaten egg. This will give them an appealing golden-brown color upon baking.
  6. Bake: Place the assembled pastries on the prepared baking sheet with ample space between them. Bake in the preheated oven for 15 to 18 minutes, or until the pastries are puffed up and golden brown.
  7. Cool and Finish: Remove the pastries from the oven and let them cool slightly on a wire rack. Optionally, dust with powdered sugar or drizzle with an orange glaze made from powdered sugar and orange juice before serving.

Notes

  • Add a small drizzle of orange glaze made with powdered sugar and orange juice for extra sweetness and a glossy finish.
  • Finely chopping the pistachios ensures even distribution of the filling and prevents large nut chunks from breaking the pastry.
  • Make sure to use a cold puff pastry and avoid overhandling to keep the layers flaky.
  • Egg wash helps achieve a beautiful golden color but can be omitted for an egg-free option.
