Ingredients
Scale
Filling
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 onion, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon cumin
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- Salt and pepper to taste
Dough and Topping
- 1 package empanada dough discs
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
Instructions
- Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) to prepare for baking the empanadas to a golden crisp.
- Sauté Aromatics: In a skillet over medium heat, cook the chopped onion and minced garlic until they become soft and fragrant, which usually takes about 3-5 minutes.
- Cook the Beef Filling: Add the ground beef to the skillet along with cumin, paprika, salt, and pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the beef is thoroughly browned and cooked through, approximately 8-10 minutes.
- Cool the Filling: Remove the skillet from heat and allow the beef mixture to cool slightly to avoid melting the dough when assembled.
- Assemble Empanadas: Place a spoonful of the beef filling in the center of each empanada dough disc. Fold the dough over to form a half-moon shape and press the edges with a fork to seal tightly.
- Apply Egg Wash: Brush the tops of each empanada with the beaten egg to encourage a beautiful golden crust during baking.
- Bake: Arrange the empanadas on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until the dough is golden brown and crispy.
Notes
- Ensure the beef mixture is cooled before assembling to prevent the dough from becoming soggy.
- You can substitute ground beef with ground turkey or chicken for a leaner option.
- For a spicier filling, add chopped jalapeños or a pinch of chili powder.
- Empanadas can be frozen before baking; bake them directly from frozen with an extra 5 minutes of cook time.
- Serve with chimichurri sauce or your favorite dipping sauce for added flavor.
