Description

A classic Italian Stromboli featuring a rolled pizza dough stuffed with savory layers of salami, ham, pepperoni, and a blend of mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses, optionally enhanced with sautéed bell peppers and onions. Baked to golden perfection and served with marinara sauce for dipping, this hearty, flavorful dish is perfect as a main course or party food.

Ingredients

Scale

Dough and Seasoning

  • 1 pound pizza dough
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Meats and Cheese

  • 1/2 pound sliced salami
  • 1/2 pound sliced ham
  • 1/2 pound sliced pepperoni
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Vegetables (Optional)

  • 1/2 cup sautéed bell peppers and onions (optional)

Serving

  • 1/2 cup marinara sauce (for dipping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prepare for baking.
  2. Roll Dough: On a lightly floured surface, roll the pizza dough into a large rectangle approximately 10 by 14 inches, ensuring the dough is even for consistent cooking.
  3. Layer Fillings: Evenly layer the sliced salami, ham, and pepperoni over the dough, leaving a 1-inch border around the edges to seal the Stromboli properly. Sprinkle mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses over the meat layer, then add sautéed bell peppers and onions if using. Finish with a sprinkle of Italian seasoning.
  4. Roll and Seal: Starting from the long side, tightly roll the dough into a log shape. Pinch the seams and ends closed to prevent filling from leaking during baking.
  5. Prepare for Baking: Place the rolled Stromboli seam-side down on the prepared baking sheet. Brush the top with a mixture of olive oil and beaten egg to create a glossy, golden crust. Cut a few small slits on top to allow steam to escape while baking.
  6. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 25 to 30 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and cooked through.
  7. Rest and Serve: Remove from the oven and let the Stromboli rest for 5 minutes before slicing. Serve warm with marinara sauce for dipping.

Notes

  • You can customize the filling by adding provolone cheese, cooked sausage, mushrooms, or spinach to suit your taste.
  • For extra flavor, sprinkle garlic powder and dried oregano on top before baking.
  • Ensure the dough is sealed well to prevent filling from spilling out during baking.
  • Use parchment paper or a silicone mat to avoid sticking and for easier cleanup.
