Description

Homemade Apple Thyme Jam is a delightful, spiced preserve combining the natural sweetness of apples with the subtle herbal notes of fresh thyme. This easy-to-make jam is enhanced with warming cinnamon and nutmeg, balanced by lemon juice’s acidity and perfected with fruit pectin for that perfect set. Ideal for spreading on toast, dolloping over yogurt, or gifting in charming jars.

Ingredients

Scale

Jam Ingredients

  • 4 cups apples, peeled, cored, and finely chopped
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2 teaspoons fresh thyme leaves, finely chopped
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 package (1.75 oz) fruit pectin

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Apples: Peel, core, and finely chop 4 cups of apples. Place them in a large pot to start your jam base.
  2. Add Liquids: Pour in 1/2 cup water and 1/4 cup lemon juice with the apples. This not only prevents the apples from browning but also adds the necessary acidity to aid in setting the jam.
  3. Incorporate Sugar: Stir in 2 cups of granulated sugar thoroughly ensuring an even distribution throughout the apple mixture.
  4. Spice it Up: Sprinkle 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon and 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg into the pot. Then add 2 teaspoons of fresh thyme leaves for a fragrant herbal layer.
  5. Bring to Boil: Over medium heat, slowly bring the mixture to a boil, stirring frequently to prevent the sugar from scorching on the pot’s bottom.
  6. Add Pectin: When boiling, stir in the entire package (1.75 oz) of fruit pectin until fully dissolved to ensure a proper gel formation.
  7. Cook the Jam: Keep boiling the jam vigorously for 1-2 minutes while stirring constantly. This helps to thicken the jam to the ideal consistency.
  8. Jar the Jam: Remove the pot from heat. Using a ladle, carefully pour the hot jam into sterilized jars, leaving about 1/4 inch headspace at the top.
  9. Seal and Process: Seal the jars with lids and rings. Process them in a boiling water bath for 5 minutes to safely preserve the jam.
  10. Cool and Store: Remove jars carefully from the water bath and place on a countertop to cool. Listen for the ‘pop’ sound of the lids sealing properly as the jam sets.

Notes

  • Ensure jars and lids are properly sterilized to prevent spoilage.
  • Use fresh thyme for the best herbal flavor; dried thyme can be substituted but use half the quantity.
  • Adjust sugar amount slightly based on apple sweetness, but do not reduce below recommended when using pectin.
  • Jam consistency will firms up further as it cools.
  • Store the jam in a cool, dark place; refrigerate after opening.
