Optional additions like bacon, jalapeños, tomatoes, or pesto add extra flavor to suit your taste.
Ingredients
Scale
Main Ingredients
- 8 slices of thick bread (sourdough or brioche recommended)
- 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese (or your preferred cheese)
- 2 tablespoons butter, softened
Optional Fillings
- Cooked bacon bits
- Sliced jalapeños
- Chopped tomatoes
- Pesto
Other
- Wooden skewers
Instructions
- Prepare the bread and cheese: Lay out 4 slices of bread on a clean surface. Evenly distribute shredded cheddar cheese over each slice. Add any optional fillings like bacon bits, jalapeños, chopped tomatoes, or pesto if using.
- Assemble the sandwiches: Place the remaining 4 slices of bread on top of the cheese-covered slices, forming sandwiches.
- Butter the sandwiches: Lightly spread softened butter on the outside of each sandwich to ensure a crispy, golden crust when grilled.
- Grill the sandwiches: Heat a skillet or panini press over medium heat. Grill the sandwiches for about 3 to 4 minutes per side until both sides are golden brown and the cheese inside has fully melted.
- Cool and cut: Once grilled, let the sandwiches cool slightly to allow the cheese to set a bit. Cut each sandwich into four equal quarters.
- Skewer the sandwich pieces: Carefully thread wooden skewers through each sandwich quarter to create bite-sized grilled cheese skewers.
- Serve: Serve the skewers warm. They pair wonderfully with dipping sauces such as tomato soup, ranch dressing, or marinara sauce for added flavor.
Notes
- Using thick bread like sourdough or brioche helps hold the fillings well and enhances texture.
- Optional fillings can be customized based on preference, such as adding herbs or different types of cheese.
- Ensure the butter is softened for easier spreading and better grilling results.
- Monitor grilling time closely to prevent burning; medium heat works best.
- Letting sandwiches cool slightly before cutting prevents the cheese from oozing out excessively.
- Wooden skewers should be soaked in water for 10 minutes if grilling outdoors to prevent burning (optional).
