Description

Crispy Homemade Wontons are golden-fried dumplings filled with a savory mixture of ground pork, shrimp, and aromatic seasonings. Perfect as a delightful appetizer, these wontons deliver a satisfying crunch and rich flavors, served best with your favorite dipping sauces like sweet chili or soy sauce.

Ingredients

Scale

Filling

  • 1/2 lb ground pork
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped shrimp (optional)
  • 2 green onions, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • 1 tsp fresh ginger, grated
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp cornstarch

For Assembly

  • 1 egg, beaten (for sealing)
  • 30 square wonton wrappers

For Frying

  • Vegetable oil, for frying

Instructions

  1. Prepare the filling: In a bowl, thoroughly mix the ground pork, finely chopped shrimp (if using), green onions, minced garlic, soy sauce, sesame oil, grated fresh ginger, salt, black pepper, and cornstarch until well combined and seasoned evenly.
  2. Assemble wontons: Place a wonton wrapper on a clean, dry surface. Spoon about 1 teaspoon of the filling into the center of the wrapper. Brush the edges with beaten egg to moisten and fold the wrapper diagonally into a triangle, pressing firmly to seal the edges to prevent the filling from leaking out.
  3. Shape wontons: Bring the two opposite corners of the triangle together, pinch and seal to create the traditional wonton shape. Repeat this process with the remaining wrappers and filling until all wontons are formed.
  4. Heat oil: Pour vegetable oil into a deep skillet or pot to a depth suitable for deep frying. Heat the oil to 350°F (175°C), using a thermometer to ensure the correct temperature for crispy, evenly cooked wontons.
  5. Fry wontons: Carefully add wontons in batches to avoid overcrowding. Fry each batch for 3 to 4 minutes, turning occasionally so they brown evenly and achieve a crispy golden exterior.
  6. Drain and serve: Use a slotted spoon to remove the fried wontons and drain them on paper towels to remove excess oil. Serve hot with sweet chili sauce, soy sauce, or your choice of dipping sauce for an irresistible appetizer.

Notes

  • Wontons can be prepared in advance and frozen before frying. Arrange them in a single layer on a tray until completely frozen, then transfer to a zip-top bag for storage.
  • When frying frozen wontons, add 1 to 2 minutes to the usual cook time to ensure they cook through and become crisp.
  • For extra flavor, consider adding finely chopped water chestnuts or mushrooms to the filling.
  • Adjust seasoning to taste, especially if you prefer less salt or soy sauce.
