Ingredients
Scale
Puff Pastry Base
- 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
Cream Cheese Filling
- 4 ounces cream cheese, softened
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon lemon zest
Berry Layer
- 1/2 cup blackberry jam
- 1/2 cup fresh blackberries
Egg Wash & Topping
- 1 egg, beaten
- 1 tablespoon milk
- 1 tablespoon coarse sugar (optional)
Glaze (Optional)
- 1/2 cup powdered sugar
- 1 to 2 tablespoons milk
Instructions
- Preheat and Prepare: Preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and facilitate easy cleanup.
- Shape the Pastry: On a lightly floured surface, slightly roll out the puff pastry sheet and cut it into 4 equal squares to create individual Danish bases.
- Make the Cream Cheese Mixture: In a small bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, and lemon zest. Mix until smooth and creamy to ensure even distribution of flavors.
- Assemble the Danishes: Spoon a generous portion of the cream cheese mixture into the center of each puff pastry square. Top with a spoonful of blackberry jam, then add fresh blackberries on top for texture and freshness.
- Fold the Pastry (Optional): You can either fold the corners of each square slightly towards the center to partially cover the filling or leave the squares open-faced for a more rustic look.
- Apply Egg Wash: Whisk together the beaten egg and milk, then brush this mixture over the edges of the pastry squares to promote browning and create a shiny finish.
- Add Toppings: Sprinkle coarse sugar over the edges of the pastries if desired, adding extra crunch and sweetness.
- Bake: Place the prepared pastries on the lined baking sheet and bake for 18 to 22 minutes, or until the puff pastry is golden brown and puffed up beautifully.
- Cool Slightly: Remove the danishes from the oven and allow them to cool on a wire rack for a few minutes before adding the glaze.
- Prepare and Drizzle Glaze (Optional): Mix the powdered sugar with 1 to 2 tablespoons of milk until smooth. Drizzle this glaze over the cooled danishes to add a sweet finishing touch.
Notes
- You can substitute raspberry or blueberry preserves in place of blackberry jam for a different flavor profile.
- Keep the puff pastry cold before baking to ensure maximum flakiness in the crust.
- These danishes are best enjoyed fresh but can be reheated gently in the oven to restore flakiness.
