Description

This refreshing Basil Lemonade is a perfect summer drink that combines the bright citrus flavor of fresh lemons with the aromatic, herbal notes of basil. It’s easy to make with a homemade basil-infused simple syrup, freshly squeezed lemon juice, and cold water, resulting in a balanced, thirst-quenching beverage perfect for hot days.

Ingredients

Scale

Basil Simple Syrup

  • 1 cup fresh basil leaves, packed
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup water (for simple syrup)

Lemonade

  • 1 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice (from about 6-8 lemons)
  • 4-5 cups cold water (for diluting)
  • Lemon slices, for garnish (optional)
  • Basil sprigs, for garnish (optional)
  • Ice cubes

Instructions

  1. Make the basil simple syrup: In a medium saucepan, combine 1 cup sugar and 1 cup water. Heat over medium heat, stirring constantly until the sugar completely dissolves, about 3-5 minutes.
  2. Infuse the basil: Add the packed basil leaves to the hot syrup, gently pressing them down. Reduce heat to low and let it simmer gently for 10-15 minutes to allow the basil flavor to infuse. Avoid boiling to preserve delicate flavors.
  3. Steep the syrup: Remove the saucepan from heat and let the basil steep in the syrup for at least 30 minutes to deepen the basil flavor.
  4. Strain the syrup: Strain the syrup through a fine-mesh sieve into a clean jar or container, discarding the basil leaves. Let the syrup cool completely before proceeding.
  5. Prepare the lemon juice: Roll ripe lemons firmly on a countertop to release more juice. Juice approximately 6-8 lemons using a citrus juicer, removing any seeds. Optionally, strain the juice to remove pulp and measure out 1 cup of freshly squeezed lemon juice.
  6. Combine ingredients: In a large pitcher, mix the cooled basil simple syrup, 1 cup fresh lemon juice, and 4 cups cold water. Stir well to combine.
  7. Adjust taste: Taste the lemonade and add more simple syrup if it’s too tart or more lemon juice and/or water if it’s too sweet. If the lemonade is too strong, dilute it with an additional 1 cup or more of cold water until it reaches your preferred strength.
  8. Chill: Refrigerate the lemonade for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld and serve it cold.
  9. Serve and garnish: Serve the basil lemonade over ice cubes and garnish with lemon slices and fresh basil sprigs if desired for an extra burst of flavor and visual appeal.

Notes

  • This homemade basil simple syrup can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
  • For a stronger basil flavor, let the leaves steep in the syrup for longer before straining.
  • Adjust sweetness and tartness according to your preference by varying the amount of simple syrup, lemon juice, or water.
  • Use ripe lemons that are heavy and have smooth, thin skins for maximum juice yield.
  • Feel free to add sparkling water instead of still water for a fizzy variation of this lemonade.
